a tax hike closer to levels seen in Europe is needed to shift the U.S. economy to more fuel-efficient cars, ease dependence on foreign oil and pay for better public transit.

The federal gasoline tax is 18.4 cents, unchanged for about 10 years. State taxes can add up to another 20-30 cents, still a small fraction of the national average price for regular gasoline of $2.80 recorded by the nationwide Lundberg survey on Friday.

That is close to the inflation-adjusted high of $3.12 a gallon in 1981, but way too low according to syndicated New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, who urges a gradual increase in the federal gasoline tax by $2.

The revenue would "fund tax breaks for Americans to convert their cars to hybrid technology or biofuels, fund a Manhattan Project to develop alternatives for energy independence, and subsidize mass-transit systems for our major cities," he wrote recently.

The idea has a few surprising supporters in the auto industry, such as Mike Jackson, chief executive of AutoNation Inc. , the largest U.S. auto dealer.

At the Reuters Autos Summit in Detroit last week, he said a tax hike was "long overdue."

"Just raise it 10 cents a year (and leave it) open-ended. You raise the demand for fuel efficiency and you justify the cost of the technology," he said, referring to hybrid vehicles.

Tim Leuliette, chief executive of auto parts maker Metaldyne Corp. in Plymouth, Michigan, has proposed a similar increase to usher in the era of hydrogen-powered cars.

He wants a 50-cent tax hike phased in between 2008 and 2012 to fund research, build infrastructure and pay for incentives to get the public to buy the new cars.

Leuliette and Jim Press, who heads the U.S. arm of Toyota Motor Corp. , will travel to Washington, D.C., next month to push energy independence as a major issue in 2008 elections.

"Do you know what the real cost of gas is?" Press asked at the Reuters Summit last week. "You need to add to that $3 a gallon the cost of a war in Iraq, the cost of losing American soldiers to keep a pipeline of oil going."

NO SUPPORT IN CONGRESS

Republican congressional leaders have flatly rejected any talk of raising the federal gasoline tax to curb consumption. One aide to a senior Republican senator said "the idea is not a good one and not worth dignifying with a comment."

"Republicans are against it and Democrats are against it -- that doesn't leave much to work with," said Rep. Ed Markey, Democrat from Massachusetts.

Markey recently introduced a bipartisan bill that would require automakers to boost the fuel efficiency of new vehicles to an average of 33 miles per gallon over the coming decade from the current 25 mpg.

"It is possible to achieve the goal of fuel efficiency without increasing gasoline taxes," he said, adding that his legislation would save an estimated 2.6 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) by 2025.

The United States consumes nearly 21 million bpd, more than half of it imported. Fuel economy peaked in 1986 and has gone backward ever since as Americans bought more trucks and SUVs.

A previous attempt to require better mileage for new vehicles was defeated in the Senate this summer when it passed a $14.5 billion energy bill that aimed to boost energy production and gave extensive tax breaks and subsidies to the industry.

EUROPEAN TAXES

In Europe, taxes make up an average of 60 percent of the gasoline price, which can reach $7 a gallon in the Netherlands.

High prices force European to drive less, buy more efficient cars and use more public transportation. European motorists drive half the miles each year that Americans do on average, the International Energy Agency estimates.

In London, which has a congestion charge to discourage car travel, about 87 percent of people commute by public transit.

Effect of greenhouse gases up 20% since 1990

The effect of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere has increased 20 percent since 1990, showed the Annual Greenhouse Gas Index (AGGI) released Tuesday.

The index was set to a reading of 1 as of 1990, and it is now up to 1.20, indicating a 20 percent increase of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the air, said the Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL), of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The greenhouse gases, mostly from industrial activities, can help trap solar heat in the air, leading to global warming.

"The AGGI will serve as a gauge of success or failure of future efforts to curb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas increases in the atmosphere both by natural and human-engineered processes,"said David Hofmann, CMDL director.

In the current reading, for every million air molecules there are about 375 carbon dioxide molecules, two methane molecules and less than one nitrous oxide molecule. The CFCs, a key factor responsible for the depletion of the protective ozone layer, make up less than one molecule in a billion in the atmosphere.

The greenhouse gases produce an effect known as radiative forcing, which is a shift in the balance between solar radiation coming into the atmosphere and Earth's radiation going out.

日军的化学战与日本称霸世界的战略意图

  我们揭露日军吞并中国、称霸世界的战略意图,批判日本军国主义惨无人道的罪恶本质,不是为了别的,而是为了以史为鉴,共同面向和平的未来。

  日本军国主义者长期以来公然违背国际法,进行化学战研制,并在侵华战争期间有组织地、大规模地使用惨无人道的化学武器,对中国人民犯下了滔天罪行。那么,它的战略目标是什么呢?这是值得全世界爱好和平的人们深思的。

  对外扩张侵略邻国

  日本在近代随着天皇制的建立和巩固,治国指导思想逐步向军国主义发展,开始走上对外扩张的道路。

  1868年,日皇睦仁颁布的《宸翰》(即《御笔信》)就昭示臣民:“继承列祖列宗之 伟业,不问一身艰难辛苦,经营四方,安抚亿兆,冀终开拓万里之波涛,布国威于四方。”随后,日本确立了统帅部独立于政府之外、陆海军大臣有现役军人出任、 军部享有“帏幄上奏权”,因而得以左右国政的国家政治体制,并于1889年由明治宪法以国家根本大法的形式予以确认,从而为军国主义的畸形发展提供了政治 体制和法律的保障。

  1880年,日本参谋本部长山县有朋在派人窃取中国军事情报的基础上,编写了《邻邦兵备略》,论述了中国的军备,强调必须准备对华战争。

  1890年,作为日本首相的山县有朋在日本第一届帝国议会发表“利益线论”施政方针 的演说,指出:“凡国家能保全主权线及利益线者方为国家。当今列国并立,维持一国之独立仅只防守主权线不可谓完备,必须同时保卫利益线”。所谓“利益 线”,即指朝鲜与中国。他的“卫国”之道为:一防卫疆域;二吞并朝鲜;三入侵中国。“利益线论”的提出,标志着以扩充军备为方式、以对外侵略扩张为国家最 高目标的“大陆政策”,正式确立为日本的基本国策。

  正是在上述思想的指导下,日本加紧了侵略中国及邻近国家的步骤。1874年,日本 派兵侵犯台湾,中国的清王朝被迫签订《北京专约》,赔偿50万两白银。1879年,日本吞并受中国保护的琉球国,改设冲绳县。1894年,日本入侵朝鲜, 并发动侵略中国的甲午战争。第二年迫使清王朝签订丧权辱国的《马关条约》,攫取了中国的台湾及所有附属岛屿、澎湖列岛及辽东半岛,20000万两白银的赔 款及其他大量特权。后来辽东半岛虽然被迫归还中国,但日本又勒索白银3000万两。1900年,日本参加“八国联军”入侵中国,与其他列强逼迫清王朝签订 《辛丑条约》,勒索白银45000万两(本息合计达98000万两)。1904年,日本为同俄国争夺中国的东北,在中国的辽东半岛发动“日俄战争”,攫取 了俄国原来在东北的大量特权,代替俄国取得在中国东北的支配地位。1912年,日本与俄国签订《日俄密约》,又擅自规定日本在中国内蒙古东部有特殊权益。 1914年,日本派兵侵占原被德国占领的中国胶州湾,控制了胶济铁路以至整个山东。1915年,日本向中国的袁世凯军阀政府提出旨在灭亡中国的“二十一 条”秘密条款,试图独霸中国。

  就在日本加紧侵略中国的过程中,化学武器在第一次世界大战中发挥出了特殊的威力。 1915年4月22日,德军在比利时西部的伊珀尔法军阵地施放了大量的氯气弹,迅速打开了一条宽6公里的缺口,使德军不发一枪就轻而易举地获得了纵深4公 里的地域。德军在伊珀尔的胜利和联军秋风扫落叶般溃败的消息,引起了各国军事专家的极大关注。日本陆军统帅部对此非常重视,命令陆军技术审查部对以毒气为 主的欧洲战场的各种新武器开展综合调查研究。这是日本陆军有组织的化学战研究的开始,军用防毒面具研究也始于此时。后来,德军又使用了比氯气的毒害作用大 18倍的光气,以及被称为“毒剂之王”的芥子气,这都引起了日军高度重视。1917年,日军试制出了防毒面具,进行了包括用轻型迫击炮发射毒气弹的实用试 验。

  1918年,日本为出兵西伯利亚,武装进犯十月革命胜利以后以列宁为领导的俄国, 加快了包括化学武器研制在内的化学战准备。措施之一,就是在陆军省内部成立了以兵器局长渡边满太郎少将为委员长的“毒气临时调查委员会”,以推动“为出兵 西伯利亚做化学战准备”。日本内部的档案披露,“毒气临时调查委员会”的任务是研究并制造毒气、改良防毒面具并进行批量生产等,为出兵西伯利亚紧急赶制战 地必需品。1919年4月,日军设立了陆军技术本部和陆军科学研究所,开始研制化学武器。1923年,日本海军技术研究院化学部也开始研究化学武器。

  从上面的情况可以清楚地看出,日本化学武器的研制完全是为了适应对外扩张、侵略邻国的需要而进行的。

  征服中国 称霸世界

  随着日本化学战的准备工作日趋完备,日本军国主义对外扩张的野心也越来越大,逐渐形成了先征服中国,进而称霸世界的战略目标。

  1927年春,日本陷入了空前的金融危机。为了渡过危机,日本决定加大对外侵略的步 伐。这年6月27日至7月7日,日本首相田中义一主持召开“东方会议”,提出了《对华政策纲领》,并撰写了密奏日皇的《帝国对满蒙之根本积极政策》,详细 论证了以满蒙为侵略扩张基地的战略方针,这就是臭名昭著的“田中奏折”。其中明确提出:“惟欲征服支那,必先征服满蒙;欲征服世界,必先征服支那。倘支那 完全可被我国征服,其他如小亚细亚、中亚细亚及印度、南洋等异服之民族,必畏我敬我而降于我,使世界知东亚为我之东亚,永不敢向我侵犯。”这个“新大陆政 策”,使日本原来的大陆政策更加系统化,露骨地表明了日本军国主义独吞中国、称霸世界的狼子野心,并把攫取整个中国东北定为日本大陆政策新的战略目标,预 示着一系列重大的武力侵华行动即将展开。

  正是为了实现这个战略目标,日军统帅部于1929年成立了“化学战委员会”,加快对化学战方针和政策的研究;同时在冲绳县的大久野岛建立了专门生产化学毒剂的工厂——忠海兵器工厂,从此大久野岛就变成了“毒气岛”。

  1931年,经过密谋策划,日本发动“九·一八”事变,发起大规模的侵华战争,迅速 占领中国东北。为了扑灭东北人民抗日的怒火,日本陆军部于1932年12月发表了军备改革修正案。该方案以“九·一八“事变为焦点,提出了4个重大措施: (1)充实在满兵力,(2)充实补备教育,(3)改善紧急情况下的各项制度,(4)充实作战装备和器材。其中,在第三项措施中,列出了“各部队毒气防护的 教育设施”和“设立毒气防护教育结构”两个项目。这样,日军就正式装备了芥子气、路易氏气、二苯氰砷、光气、二苯基乙二酮和苯氯乙酮等毒剂。设立化学战学 校的问题也被提上议事日程。1933年,又决定新设“毒气防护教育机构”和“军队毒气防护教育设施”,把“毒气防护教育机构”命名为“陆军习志野学校”, 专门开展对“与毒气有关人员的教育”。这一年,日军与毒气有关的受训人数已超过4万人。到1937年日本发动全面侵华战争前,日军从组织机构、开发体制、 研究经费、设施建设等各方面已经作好了化学战的准备,建立了包括研究、生产、训练和作战等一整套的化学战体系。

  1937年日本发动全面侵华战争后,日皇的弟弟、日军参谋总长载仁就向日军中国派 遣军司令官香月清寺下达了可在适当时机使用化学武器的命令。以后,他又陆续向日本驻华北、华中各地区的日军司令官,下达了可使用呕吐性和糜烂性化学武器的 命令。在整个侵华战争期间,日军大本营就使用化学武器直接发布的命令至少有15项。至于各部队向下级部队下达的命令,就更多了。

  在派遣大量化学战部队前往中国的同时,日军还派遣了4个野战化学试验部,对中国军 队的化学战装备进行调查。接到野战化学试验部的调查报告后,日本陆军统帅部认定中国军队的化学战装备水平很低甚至完全没有,不用担心遭受报复的问题,因此 决定大量使用“红剂”(指刺激性毒剂)等化学武器。在1938年春天进行的徐州会战中,日军就开始大量使用“红剂”;在1938年10月的武汉会战中,日 军更大量地使用化学武器。据日本华中派遣军报告,自8月11日至11月21日,曾进行过375次以上的毒气战,作为支援进攻作战、打开苦战局面的有力武 器。从此,毒气战对于日军而言成为不可或缺的手段,很多日军习以为常地对其产生了心理依赖。

  从1939年开始,日军对化学武器的研究、开发与实战运用,进入了一个新的阶段。 这年8月,它在中国东北的齐齐哈尔设立了关东军化学部,即以进行活体试验而臭名昭著的第516部队,并在梅河口附近进行了添加氰酸的各种武器试验。从这年 开始,日军在作战中使用化学武器更加普遍,对化学武器的使用也从专业部队普及到普通部队。在大规模的战役中,动辄使用数千乃至数万枚毒气炮弹和毒气筒,即 使小规模的战斗,只要对日军的攻势或撤退不利,也会使用化学武器。

  由此可见,日军在侵华战争期间大规模使用化学武器,进行化学战,已经成为他们实现占领中国、称霸世界战略目标的直接手段。

  清算罪责 为了和平

  日军为了通过速战速决的战略战术,迅速征服中国,实现其对外扩张、称霸世界的战略目标,不惜违反国际法,公然动用化学武器,对中国人民犯下了滔天罪行。这些罪恶行径,理所当然地会引起中国人民和世界上爱好和平的人们的愤怒、揭露和声讨。

  特别令人愤慨的是,日军不仅在战斗中大量地使用化学武器,而且还丧心病狂地利用化学 武器残害手无寸铁的中国平民。在对抗日根据地的疯狂“扫荡”中,日军在实行“烧光、杀光、抢光”这“三光”政策的同时,就频繁地使用了化学武器。例如 1942年5月27日,日军在河北定县北疃村,向躲在地道中的无辜村民施放了大量的“赤筒”(即刺激性毒剂)和“绿筒”(即催泪性毒剂)毒气,致使800 多名村民被残酷地毒害而死。在河北文新县叩岗村、井陉县老虎洞,山西沁水县西山、定襄县上雾山等地,都发生了日军使用毒气造成的惨案,仅在井陉县老虎洞, 一次就毒死150多人。因此,中国人民提出彻底清算日本军国主义的化学战罪行,是完全合情合理的。

  但是,我们这样做,揭露日军吞并中国、称霸世界的战略意图,批判日本军国主义惨无 人道的罪恶本质,不是为了别的,而是为了以史为鉴,共同面向和平的未来。日本在战争期间长期实施化学战,既违反了国际法的基本准则,也违反了人类道义的基 本信条,是人类历史上最惨无人道的战争罪行之一。这是不容回避和抹杀的。中国人民较之世界上其他地区的人民,蒙受了更多的苦难。这也是不容抹杀和否定的。 不仅对于中国人民来说,而且对于日本人民来说,对于世界各国人民来说,全人类都应该永远记住60年前日军的这一罪行。我们要牢记历史、不忘过去、珍爱和 平、开创未来

New cure for leukemia

HLA-DRB1 typing reagent is cheaper than imported reagent of its kind and is easier and quicker in use, said Wang Shengqi, head of the key laboratory of biological genetic chips under the academy, who has led the team of this research for five years.

The new typing reagent can be used to test all the 13 discovered genetic types of HLA-DRB1, covering all the 18 known serological types, according to Wang.

Transplantation of hematopoietic stem cell is the most effective treatment of leukemia. Bone marrow donors have to go through HLA genetic typing to find a matchable leukemia patient, he said.

The reagent is also applicable in organ transplantation, forensic medicine and HLA-related studies

More than 900 dead in Uttar Pradesh encephalitis outbreak

(Reuters) - The death toll in India's worst encephalitis outbreak in nearly 30 years has reached 900 but the number of new infections has fallen in the past week, officials said on Sunday.

More than 4,200 people have fallen ill with the virus in the densely-populated northern state of Uttar Pradesh since late July and close to 90 percent of fatalities have been children between 3-to-15 years.

"With 12 deaths over the past 24 hours, the overall toll has reached 914," a spokesman for the Uttar Pradesh government said.

Encephalitis is caused by a virus found in pigs and wild birds and transferred to humans by a mosquito bite. The disease affects the brain and causes headaches, convulsions, high fever and respiratory distress. Many survivors are left mentally or physically handicapped.

Blair falls into line with Bush on global warming

Over the past two years Blair has consistently claimed global leadership in tackling what he described as "long term, the singlemost important issue we face as a global community," stressing that it "can only properly be addressed through international agreements."

Bush, however, had repeatedly expressed anger at this position.

肝癌主要诱因:霉变食物

肝癌主要与乙型肝炎病毒、丙型肝炎病毒、黄曲霉素、饮水污染、某些微量元素缺乏、遗传因素、嗜酒等因素有关。饮食中经常含有致癌物质,就较容易促发 肝癌。因此,切忌食用发霉食品,尽量选食新鲜食物,不要食用长期存放可能被霉菌污染的食物,霉变食物中的黄曲霉素能诱发肝癌;尽量少食油炸、油煎食物;一 些陈腐油类中含有丙二醛,也能使蛋白质的结构变异,导致变异蛋白质的细胞失去正常功能并向初期癌细胞转化。

日成功利用脂肪干细胞再生骨髓

《朝日新闻》报道指出,干细胞拥有发展成为骨骼、肌肉和神经等各种组织的潜力。再生医疗通常利用由受精卵制作的胚胎干细胞或骨髓中的干细胞进行研 究,但血液疾病患者,病灶大多出在骨髓,因而很难利用骨髓干细胞。如果能利用可充分取得的脂肪,除可避开伦理道德问题外,亦可避免移植时的排斥反应,势必 能大举减轻病患负担。   日本医科大学整型外科助教小川令表示,“从能再生出骨髓来看,推定其正常造血环境完备。未来可望应用于白血病、骨髓纤维变性或骨石化症等血液疾病的治疗上。”

目前全球大约10亿人体重超标

世界卫生组织在世界心脏日(9月25日)前夕发表新闻公报说,目前全球大约有10亿人体重超标,这一趋势如果得不到改变的话,10年后全球体重超标的人口将达到15亿。公报说,全世界每年死于心血管疾病的人超过1700万,而体重超标和肥胖是罹患这类疾病的重要因素。

  以往,体重超标和肥胖被认为是富裕国家的问题,但现在这一现象在中低收入的国家里也迅速蔓延。其主要原因是,这些国家人们的饮食习惯在逐渐改变,人们摄取越来越多的高脂、高盐、高糖和高热量食物。此外,人们参与的体力活动也越来越少。

英国将在明年底推出每秒100MB宽带网服务

9月25日消息,英国有线电视运营商Telewest正在苏格兰将其宽带网速度网络升级到每秒10MB,并且将在明年年底之前把在伦敦的宽带网速度提高到每秒100MB。

  据英国IT新闻网站ZDNet UK报道,英国有线电视运营商Telewest于9月23日称,由于它对DOCSIS(线缆服务接口数据规格)标准的投资,它将采用这种技术把宽带网的连接速度提高到目前连接速度的十倍,最终使宽带网的速度达到每秒100MB。

  Telewest希望推出基于“DOCSIS 3”标准的中间件软件的服务。这项服务将在2006年年底之前把下载速度提高到每秒50MB至100MB。与此同时,这家公司还宣布,它将在英国推出每秒 10MB的宽带网服务。这项服务首先在英格兰推出,然后在明年年初开始在伦敦推出,并且在随后的12个月里普及到英国的其它地区。

  Telewest计划将其全部的宽带网服务从目前的每秒4MB提高到每秒10MB。该公司还宣布,宽带网服务的价格将从每月50英镑下调到35英镑。

  据介绍,DOCSIS3标准是在混合光纤同轴电缆上工作的。但是,Telewest还计划升级其以太网服务,让用户把以太网电缆直接插在计算机的后面,而不再需要调制解调器。

  英国的UK Online and Be公司正计划在今年秋季晚些时候在伦敦推出每秒24MB的宽带网服务。此举将使该公司抢在BT公司计划推出的每秒8MB的服务的前面

全球性爆发阴影下

(瑞士巴塞尔法新电)对禽流感疫情全球性爆发的担忧促使瑞士罗氏药剂公司(Roche)生产的抗病毒药“达菲”(Tamiflu)的销售量增加。

  罗氏公司发言人透露,目前,公司已接到来自30个国家与地区的订单,其中法国订购1300万剂,英国订购1460万剂,另外,新加坡、韩国、泰国和香港也订购了此药,但剂量不详。

  今年头六个月,“达菲”的销售额就达5亿8000万瑞士法郎(约7亿5600新元),这主要归功于今年初面对季节性流感大爆发的日本,当时,日本订购了价值2亿6300万瑞士法郎的药物。

  “达菲”于1999年投放市场。世界上只有包括瑞士罗氏公司在内的两家公司生产类似的抗流感药物。罗氏药剂公司的竞争对手、英国制药公司葛兰素史克公司(GlaxoSmithKline)生产另一种类似的抗流感药“瑞乐砂”(Relenza)。

Motor oil exposure and arthritis risk link

Occupational exposure to mineral oils, in particular hydraulic or motor oil, increases the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by 30%. These are the results of a study published today in Arthritis Research & Therapy.

Berit Sverdrup and Lars Alfredsson, from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockhom, Sweden, and colleagues selected a group of patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) between May 1996 and December 2003. They matched these patients with people of the same age, gender and residential area, who acted as controls. Shortly after they had been diagnosed with RA, the patients were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding occupational exposure to different types of mineral oils, such as cutting oil, motor oil, form oil, hydraulic oil and asphalt. The same questionnaire was sent to controls.

In total, the study included 1419 cases and 1674 controls. Only men reported high occupational exposure to oil, mostly motor and hydraulic oil. A group of 135 men diagnosed with RA and reporting high exposure, as well as 132 matching controls, was retained for further study.

Sverdrup et al.'s results show that men highly exposed to motor or hydraulic oil have a 30% higher risk of developing RA than unexposed men. Exposure only increased the risk of developing 'rheumatoid factor positive' (RF+) rheumatoid arthritis, a more severe form of RA.

Exposure to bird flu through animal markets

n animal markets, wild mammals, birds, and reptiles are in transit daily. In these markets they are in contact with people and with dozens of other species before they are shipped to other markets, sold locally, or even freed and sent back into the wild as part of religious customs.

Pramuka Market in East Jakarta is likely one of the world's largest animal markets (unfortunately endangered animals are traded here as well) followed by Jakarta's Jatinegara, Barito and Surabaya's Bratang and Semarang's Karimata bird markets.

Hunters, middle men, and consumers all experience some type of contact as each animal is traded. Other wildlife in the trade is temporarily exposed, and domestic animals and wild scavengers in villages and market areas consume the remnants and wastes from the traded wildlife.

The free ranging chickens in Indonesia can be easily exposed to the virus in this way, and spread it even further. This trade, coupled with rapid modern transportation and the fact that markets serve as network hubs rather than as product endpoints, dramatically increases the movement and potential cross-species transmission of infectious agents like avian influenza.

Besides the obvious economic threat to the poultry industry, a possible pandemic is a great threat to public health. The moment the avian virus mutates into a new strain which is transmissible from human to human, a pandemic is likely to occur. Pandemics are different from seasonal outbreaks or "epidemics" of influenza.

Seasonal outbreaks are caused by subtypes of influenza viruses that are already in existence among people, whereas pandemic outbreaks are caused by new subtypes or by subtypes that have never circulated among people or that have not circulated among people for a long time. The worst known pandemic of influenza (the "Spanish flu") occurred in 1918-1919, killing approximately 40 million people around the world.

Climate Change Threatens Human Health

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) are calling for a national response to one of the world's most significant environmental threats - climate change and its effect on human health.

Speaking today at the launch of their joint report, Climate Change Health Impacts in Australia: Effects of Dramatic CO2 Emission Reductions, ACF President, Professor Ian Lowe, and AMA President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, said global warming is already contributing to more frequent and extreme weather conditions.

The report, written by leading world experts on climate change from Australia and New Zealand, exposes the damage already done and paints a picture of what we might expect in the future if no action is taken.

The report says if we continue to allow emissions to increase, by 2100 up to 15,000 Australians could die every year from heat related illnesses and the dengue transmission zone could reach as far south as Brisbane and Sydney.

In contrast, early and significant action to reduce greenhouse pollution would have major health benefits

晒后皮肤变红 男性易患癌症

日晒后皮肤变红的男性比变黑的男性血液中脱氧核糖核酸(DNA)的受损率要高,从而直接导致癌症发病率增高。

  《每日新闻》近日刊登了日本九州大学副教授入江正洋的研究结果。入江正洋选择8月份晴朗天气,让27名大学男生从上午10时至下午4时只穿游泳衣在海边晒太阳。6小时后,皮肤变红和变黑的男生差不多各占一半。

  研究人员随 后测量他们体内衡量白细胞DNA氧化损伤的指标——羟基脱氧鸟嘌呤浓度。“红皮肤”日晒前每10万个白细胞中只有0.6个羟基脱氧鸟嘌呤,日晒后增至1.2个;相比之下,“黑皮肤”的这一指标在日晒前后都是0.2个。

  羟基脱氧鸟嘌呤浓度增加容易引起皮肤老化,同时肺、肝脏、泌尿器官等脏器的癌症发病率升高。

  在实验翌日的测量中,“红皮肤”每10万个白细胞中羟基脱氧鸟嘌呤的数量为0.8。虽然浓度有所下降,但还是没有恢复到实验前的水平。

Positron emission tomography (PET) may provide supportive data for detecting epileptogenic zones in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), helping to reduce the need for invasive EEG studies. Serotonin (5HT) 1A receptor binding has been shown to be decreased in TLE. We used PET to compare 5HT-1A binding measured with the silent antagonist 18FCWAY, to glucose metabolism measured with 18FDG, in 19 patients who had temporal lobectomy for uncontrolled epilepsy, and a mean follow-up of 31 months. We analyzed PET data with co-registered MRI and partial volume correction, computing an asymmetry index (AI) using the formula [2] x [ipsilateral contralateral]/[ipsilateral + contralateral] for anatomic regions drawn on each patient s co-registered MRI scan. Mean FDG asymmetry in the resected region was 0.25 0.18, versus 0.47 0.20 for FCWAY (P<0.001). Three patients, including one with normal MRI, had unrevealing FDG PET but a clear FCWAY asymmetry. There was a trend for 13 patients who were seizure-free to have greater FCWAY (p<0.08), but not FDG AI, than 6 patients with persistent seizures. Our preliminary results suggest that FCWAY PET may be more sensitive than FDG for presurgical evaluation of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Dengue fever threatening Asia

Across Asia, governments are scrambling to curtail the spread, mainly by educating the public about the potentially fatal illness and controlling mosquito-breeding areas such as stagnant pools.

Dengue is sometimes called bone-breaker's disease because it causes severe joint pain. Other symptoms include high fever, nausea and a rash. In the worst cases it causes internal bleeding. There is no known cure or vaccine.

Climate change to 'increase deaths'

UP to 15,000 Australians could die each year from heat stress, and dengue fever could spread as far south as Sydney by the end of the century unless greenhouse gas emissions are cut, a new report has warned.

The report, commissioned by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), urges immediate action by governments and individuals to counter the threat.

The two groups called for the greater use of renewable energy, mandatory biofuel blends, and an effective, national emissions control program.

AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said there must be a national response to climate change, and its effects on human health.

"Projected heat-related deaths to 2100 could be halved with strong policy action and, while the zone for potential dengue transmission is likely to move south to Rockhampton or Gympie, it would stay north of (the) more heavily populated south-east Queensland, coastal New South Wales and metropolitan Sydney,"

Indonesia recorded its first human fatalities from bird flu in July when a father and his two daughters died after contracting the virus. Officials have linked those deaths to droppings from an infected bird.

Zoo closes after Bird Flu outbreak



The main zoo in Indonesia’s capital was shut down after 19 of its birds died of the avian influenza that has killed four people in the sprawling country, officials said today.

The zoo will be closed for at least three weeks pending an investigation. Birds that test positive for the disease will be killed, all others will be vaccinated against the deadly virus.

全球气候变暖、人口急速增长和自然环境恶化,使地球上的生物正在经历有史以来的第六次大灭绝。

  刚刚在南京结束的第四次国际寒武纪大会上,国内外著名古生物学家表示了上述看法。他们认为,目前物种消失与地球历史上的生物灭绝事件惊人地相似,与以往不同的是,人类在这次生物灭绝事件中充当了“总导演”的角色。

  人为的生物大灭绝

  国际自然资源保护联合会发表的“2004年全球物种调查”显示:全球有超过15000种物种濒临灭绝,灭绝速度超过了以往任何时候。

  2004年1月出版的《自然》杂志称,由多国科学家组成的研究小组对地球上六个地区的研究表明,全球变暖将导致世界上1/4的陆地生物在未来50年内灭绝,也就是说,半个世纪后,约100万个物种将从地球上消失。

  英国皇家学会会员、剑桥大学教授西蒙·莫瑞斯说:“现在的环境和以前发生生物大灭绝 时的环境没有多少相似性。但是化石证据可以使我们判断出,在距今约4500万年前,地球经历了一次非常剧烈的气候变暖。当时全球气候变暖的程度和今天由于 人类活动导致的、地球正在经历的变暖现象有类似的地方。它们都导致了大量动植物种类灭绝。”

  科学家认为,工业革命拉开了这次生物灭绝的序幕,而且灭绝的速度越来越快。

  “除了星体撞击、全球性火山爆发等突发事件外,我们正在经历的生物灭绝比地球生命史上其他灭绝事件更为恶劣。”我国西北大学早期生命研究所所长舒德干说。

  这位近年来在《科学》和《自然》杂志上发表了十余篇早期生命研究论文的科学家说,以前的生物大灭绝都属于自然灾害,但这一次是人为的。

  科学家发现,人类活动造成的物种灭绝比自然灭绝的速度高1000倍,平均每小时就有一个物种灭绝,如夏威夷画眉和康定云杉已经消失。

  “我们对地球生物组成所知有限,但它们的栖息地都在快速消亡。人类正以史无前例的速度灭绝物种。”台湾清华大学教授、美国《科学人》杂志中文版总编辑李家维说,“工业革命以来,物种灭绝的速度大大加快了。我们今天物质需求的满足,几乎都是用损坏环境换来的。”

  前五次生物大灭绝

  科学界普遍认为,地球生命演化史经历过五次大规模的生物灭绝,虽然具体原因众说纷纭,但可以肯定都与环境突然变化有密切关系。

  第一次生物大灭绝发生在距今4.4亿年前的奥陶纪末期,导致大约80%的物种灭绝。第二次生物大灭绝发生在距今约3.65亿年前的泥盆纪后期,海洋生物遭受了灭顶之灾。

  最严重的一次生物大灭绝发生在距今约2.5亿年的二叠纪末期,导致超过95%的地球生物灭绝。在距今2亿年前的三叠纪晚期,发生了第四次生物灭绝,爬行类动物遭遇重创。最为人熟知的一次生物大灭绝发生在6500万年前,长期统治地球的恐龙灭绝了。

  近一个世纪以来,科学家探索这些生物灭绝原因的热情不断高涨。参加这一课题研究的学科越来越多,研究的程度也越来越深入,各种假说、推测和实验数据层出不穷,虽然科学家已经认定上述的五次生物灭绝属于突发性的自然灾害所致,但是令科学界普遍认可的结论至今没有出现。

  西蒙·莫瑞斯说:“研究生物灭绝是一个十分有趣的课题,它能够使人们通过历史看到全球变暖、人口膨胀给地球带来的坏处和人类应该做些什么。”

  历史没有哪个时代比今天的人们更加关注环境,但是人类对环境的破坏丝毫没有减弱。

  李家维说,虽然已经认识到了保护环境和生物多样性的重要,但当人类的利益受到威胁时,其他生物就难免灭顶之灾。比如在禽流感和登革热流行时,人们大范围喷洒消毒剂,造成一些物种在短时间内灭绝。

  生物灭绝将殃及人类

  美国寒武纪研究所所长普马·艾理森说:“人口的急速膨胀,将不可避免地导致灾难性事件。或许人类能够幸免于难,但其他生命将难逃厄运。”

  科学家们称,人类在目前的地球上处于绝对的“霸主”地位,对任何事件的考虑都是以自己为中心的,这将不可避免地影响其他生物的发展,生物多样性的单调是必然的。

  联合国粮农组织的专家经过十多年的调查,在最近发表的《家养动物多样性世界观察》中称,在过去的100年里,全世界已经有超过1000个品种的家养动物灭绝,而且这一状况还在继续恶化。

  联合国粮农组织称,在该组织全球农业动物基因资源数据库中,记录在案的家养动物有6379个品种,其中4183个品种有数据可查,而在这其中,又有740种已经灭绝,1335种处于“高度危险”状态。如果不采取措施,20年内人类还将失去2000个家畜和家禽品种。

  专家认为,造成目前家养动物多样性减少的一个主要原因是,一些发达国家输出一些“优良品种”的家畜和家禽,与进口国当地的品种进行杂交,甚至取而代之。另外,现代化的饲养方法,使得家畜和家禽养殖业越来越依赖几个优良品种,许多其他有价值的品种逐渐消失。

  专家说,生物多样性是无可替代的,基因技术只能对现有品种进行改良,并不能挽回失去的品种。家养动物的多样性减少,将使它们在环境和气候变化以及新疾病流行等因素面前更加脆弱。

  德国沃茨伯格大学教授盖亚·歌德说:“全球性的森林缩减、海平面上升和人类对环境的掠夺,使生物的多样性遭到破坏。这场危机是人类自己制造的,并使地球的自我调节能力下降了很多。”

  当今物种灭绝的主要原因是由人的活动导致了生物栖息地大面积消失和环境破坏。剩下的栖息地变小了,而且支离破碎。

  西蒙·莫瑞斯认为,人类对环境的变化将会更加敏感。比如气候变暖使陆地和海洋内生物 的数量和分布将发生变化,小麦和大米的产量也受到了影响。同时,地球需要很长的一段时间来恢复物种的多样性。人类对待环境的态度,取决于人类希望生存在怎 样的环境中以及为此作出怎样的努力。

  科学家认为,物种灭绝破坏了生物链,必将殃及人类。保护物种,首先要做到的就是在全球范围内保护它们的栖息地。人类对环境的依赖与日俱增,必须学会保护环境,与其他物种和谐共存

纳米人工肾5年内推出 病人不用再洗肾

(综合电)肾病病人经常要洗肾,换肾又要排期。美国科学家正利用纳米技术,研制一个可全面运作的人工肾,如果研究成功,肾病病人再不用洗肾,甚至不再需要进行肾脏移植手术。

  美国加州大学洛杉矶分析科学家尼森逊设计的人工肾,由两片薄膜组成,大小如一本平装书,能够让病人四处携带。

  薄膜能模仿肾脏过滤废物的功能,将病人血管接驳到人工肾后,薄膜能将血中废物和水,跟有用的物质如盐、钙和营养分隔,后者会运回体内,前者会排走。

“我真有那么老吗?

日本高龄人口数字上升,超过100岁的人瑞逐年剧增。根据卫生部最新发表的人口数字,日本全国今年超过百岁的男女人数已打破两万大关,共有2万5600人,比去年调查时整整多出2000多人,创下了35年来的最高纪录。

  在这2万5000多百岁人瑞中,又属女长寿者最多,占了全体的85%。在比老的排名榜中,还可看到最前10名都是女性。她们之中,最高龄者有两人,都已112岁,其他8人是110岁。

  当老人院职员告诉日本最高龄的女人瑞皆川瑶子(112岁):“您是日本最老的老人哦,活了112年了。”她还打哈哈的反问:“我真有那么老吗?不过,这是一件值得高兴的事。”

  皆川瑶子早年守寡,必须靠当矿工、种花养大了5个孩子。在老人院里,皆川瑶子身体一直很好,平时还喜欢种花。她爱开玩笑的性格被认为是长寿的原因。

  男人瑞中最高龄的德田二次郎(110岁)在接受媒体访问时愉快地回答问题。他手上拿着一个相机,告诉记者:“我的嗜好是拍照,我想有一个嗜好,就可保持命长。”

冲绳百岁老人

占全国一半以上

  位于日本最南端的“长寿县”冲绳,今年还是名列前茅,百岁老人占了日本全国一半以上。排名第二、第三的也都是山明水秀的地方,如高知县和岛根县等。

  专家指出:长寿人口较多的都是生活步伐较慢的郊区,那里的人们作息有规律,无忧无虑,不像东京等城市区,生活紧张,压力大。

  自日本明治时代开始,就有一说,要养老就得去冲绳。

   一个研究冲绳的饮食报告说,冲绳人长寿得归功于这个岛上的传统保健食谱:一、少摄取盐分;二、喜欢吃绿黄色素多的苦瓜;三、爱吃豆腐;四、爱吃海草类食 品;五、冲绳人虽爱吃猪肉,但是有独特的去油脂调理法。而且传统还规定“吃肉日”,控制人们的肉欲,很少看到冲绳人有大吃大喝的坏习惯。

  除了饮食之外,冲绳属于温带气候,冬暖夏凉,冲绳人天生爱唱歌、跳舞、爱热闹、乐观的性格,老来也不寂寞。

老人逛街 返老还童

  在日本,逛街不是年轻人的专利,老人更喜欢上街溜达。东京市中心有一条时尚大街叫“原宿”,而日本老妈妈的“原宿”,就在巢鸭商店街,这里有座寺,叫做地藏尊高岩寺。

  采访这条老人街有一大乐趣,那就是可以感受到天真无邪的“老童年”。

  街上,有许多日本的传统甜品,都是老人家小时候爱吃的甜点小吃。就像儿时那样,老人成群结队拿着冰棒边走边笑。老人喜欢逛街,但许多时候不是要给自己添新装,而是要替孙子或曾孙买他们小时候穿的衣服和玩具。因此,街上可看到在一般日本百货公司看不到的传统日式童装。

  这条街上还设了一个小公园,让老人们歇脚。上前问一对正在歇脚聊天的妇人:“你们几岁了?”较年轻的回答:“我74”。另一个回答:“我95。”才恍然大悟,她俩原来是母女,结伴来逛老人街……

“健康老年,老而不呆”

“健康老年,老而不呆”是日本卫生部在对付人口老化问题时打出的最新标语。日本老人在斗长命时,也得比健康。日本牙医为此还提倡了“8020”运动,即要求大众到了80岁保有20根牙齿,才算是真正的健康老人!

单性繁殖培育出人类胚胎

曾培育出克隆羊多利的英国罗斯林研究所8日报告说,他们首次通过单性繁殖的方法,使人类卵细胞在未受精的情况下发育成人类胚胎。

  这一技术并不是克隆(人工引导下的无性繁殖)。韩国和英国科学家此前曾经克隆出人类 早期胚胎,方法是去除卵子中的细胞核,植入体细胞的细胞核。而这次科学家不使用外来遗传物质,仅用卵子就培育出胚胎。去年日韩科学家用两只母鼠的卵子培育 出幼鼠,首次实现了哺乳动物的单性繁殖。

  研究人员说,通过这种方法获得的胚胎干细胞将可以直接用于人体移植

新发现与创新:人类大脑没有“定型”仍在快速进化

人类和黑猩猩在约600万年前由共同的祖先“分家”,此后人类祖先的大脑快速进化,并产生了较高级的认知功能,直至距今约20万年前现代智人出现为止。在人们的习惯观念中,现代人类大脑在生理上已经“定型”了。

  由芝加哥大学科学家蓝田博士领导的一个研究小组,对人类体内管理脑容量大小的两个基因的演变进行分析。他们共搜集了世界各地59个民族、1000多人的基因样本,并发现这两个基因都正在进化中,现代人的大脑没有“定型”。

  蓝田目前兼任中国中山大学干细胞研究中心主任,其相关论文发表在最新一期《科学》杂志上。

  蓝田解释说,这种进化并不是同时发生在整个种群中,而是一个漫长的选择过程。极少数个体率先发生基因变异,出现新的单模态,而基因的新单模态使这些个体获得生存和繁衍的优势,然后在整个种群中传播。

  研究人员发现,这两种对大脑发育至关重要的基因在自然选择的压力下以超乎寻常的速度进化。70%的现代人小脑症基因的单模态,是距今3.7万年前首次出现的;而30%现代人异常纺锤型小脑畸形症相关基因的单模态,是在5800年前首次出现

Ecstasy users more prone to disease

(Reuters) - Clubbers using ecstasy to keep them dancing through the night may damage their immune systems while those suffering from depression induced by the drug could be more difficult to treat, a neuroscientist said on Wednesday.

Developed as an appetite suppressant but now used at raves and night clubs to reduce inhibitions, ecstasy has been linked to psychiatric illnesses but Dr Thomas Connor of Trinity College Dublin believes it may also put physical health at risk.

"Ecstasy has potent immunosuppressant qualities which have the ability to increase an individual's susceptibility to disease," Connor told journalists at the British Association for the Advancement of Science annual festival in Dublin.

The environment in which ecstasy, also known as MDMA, is taken further increases the risk of contracting infectious diseases

人类胚胎干细胞可分化为不同的人体组织细胞。科学家一直认为可以利用这种细胞培育人类器官并进行人体移植。但是,这种治疗方法最近被证实可能存在问题。

  今年初,美国加利福尼亚大学的科学家证实,目前所有的人类胚胎干细胞系在培养和诱导分化的过程中受到了动物源培养基的污染,使一种人类在遗传上不能合成的分子进入干细胞中。

  此次,美国约翰斯-霍普金斯大学的科学家又发现人类胚胎干细胞培育的另一个弊端。人类胚胎干细胞培育的时间越长,细胞分裂的次数就越多,因而分裂过程中DNA(脱氧核糖核酸)复制可能出现的错误就越多。

  基于这种理解,研究人员对美国联邦政府准许培育的9种人类胚胎干细胞系进行了研究。他们发现,在分裂数十次后,其中8种胚胎干细胞系都会出现一种以上在人类癌细胞中普遍存在的基因变异。

鼻咽癌为我国多发肿瘤之一,在头颈部恶性肿瘤中发病率占首位。鼻咽癌的发病年龄大多在40岁~60岁之间,男性多于女性。其主要表现为———

  ★倒吸涕中带血,这是肿瘤表面破溃所引起的出血,出血量一般不多,以晨起多见。由于出血少且时有时无,因此常被患者忽视,或被误认为呼吸道炎症进行治疗。

  ★头痛也是鼻咽癌的常见症状之一,往往是由于肿瘤压迫、浸润颅神经或颅底骨质引起,也可以是局部感染或血管受刺激引起的反射性头痛。60%左右的患者以单侧颞顶部或枕部的持续疼痛为特点。这也是部分鼻咽癌患者首诊于神经内科的原因。

  ★该病还会引起耳部的症状,可出现耳鸣、听力减退、耳堵或伴有鼓室积液,此时易被误诊为分泌性中耳炎。

  ★当疾病进入晚期时,可出现鼻塞、颈部肿块(颈部淋巴结转移)和颅神经症状,如视物模糊、睑下垂,甚至眼球固定或失明。

  尽管鼻咽癌早期症状多样复杂,但只要重视鼻咽癌早期症状的蛛丝马迹,就能做到早发现、早诊断、早治疗。

Hepatitis B

乙型肝炎病毒感染是肝癌最主要的致病因素,肝癌患者HBV感染率高达90%,HBV感染者发生肝癌的概率较无HBV感染者高数十倍,HBV感染与肝癌高发区域在全球的分布上基本一致,患肝癌的危险性大,肝癌细胞中存在较高的HBV.DNA整合。

  而丙型肝炎病毒被认为是发达国家肝癌发病的主要致病因素之一,HCV感染大多数通过血液途径,随着血制品应用的增多,HCV感染在我国也有上升趋势。

  同时,黄曲霉素是肝癌发生的一个重要致癌因子。其污染多见于发霉的花生、玉米,在温湿地区肝癌的发生和死亡率高,就是因为黄曲霉素的致肝癌作用。

  另外,饮水污染与肝癌相关。微量元素与肝癌发生也有关
