9 Cases of Legionnaire's in W'chester Hospital

14 July 2005

(New Rochelle, NY) At least nine outpatients at Sound Shore Medical Center contracted Legionnaires' disease in the past month, possibly from contaminated water in a hospital cooling tower

Legionnaires' is a form of pneumonia that is spread through the air but not person to person. Most people exposed to the bacteria never get sick, but the elderly and people with weak immune systems can be susceptible. The disease is treatable with antibiotics.
